How to Raise a Responsible Child: Parent & Co-Parent Education Program

We are offering a parenting problem solving class for both married and single parents in our St. Charles office.  There are presentations on various topics including Discipline, How to Motivate the Unmotivated Child, etc.   There are three presentations consisting of two sessions each with time for questions and role playing.  The cost for this class is $30 per presentation.  Please call 630-377-3535 to sign up.

This Parent & Co-Parent Educational Program shows parents different ways to guide their children toward becoming responsible, covering a wide array of topic areas, from teaching respect for others, to what is reasonable to expect of children at different ages. Topics to be covered:

  • Remind yourself the main thing to teach your child
  • Learn reasonable expectations of your child/ren at different ages
  • Why “because I said so, works less the older a child becomes
  • Training children and adolescents to deal with their choices
  • Learn what to do when parents worry about what their children choose
  • How to know when a parent’s job is done
  • Basic assumptions for understanding behavior
  • The mistaken belief in the “good” mother
  • What the child needs the parent to be and to do
  • Teaching responsibility and respect for order
  • Choices and consequences – how the world really works
  • Using perseverance and recovery from disappointment
  • Excuses are like belly buttons: everyone’s got one
  • “The dog at my computer.” Parent and teacher relationships
  • Training takes time and practice
  • After divorce: getting mom and dad on the same page
  • After divorce: when one parent refuses to cooperate

And we’ll provide insights into questions like:

  • How did my child get that way? Heredity, environment and self concept
  • Is change possible for either parent or child?
  • What’s a parent to do if drugs and alcohol are involved?

We offer in both our St Charles and Oak Brook offices the following groups:  Social Skills, Anxiety, Depression, Children of Divorce, Sibling Support (coping skills for children with siblings with disorders), Anger Management,  and Teen groups.  If interested in any of these groups, please call 630-377-3535 to place your child’s name on the list.
