Children, Adolescents, Marital and Adults

Karen A. Baker, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with children, adolescents, marital and adults. She works in the St. Charles office.   Dr. Baker earned her Psy.D. in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.

I am skilled at developing effective therapeutic relationships with children, adolescents and adults. I specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD, phobias, self-injury, mood disorders, behavioral disorders, peer conflict, anger issues, and OCD. I work with adults regarding many family-work-life balancing issues as well as marital problems, emotional struggles, depression, anxiety and phobias.

I use an integrative approach to therapy employing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), solution focused, mindfulness, emotional regulation, skills training, family systems, and emotion-focused interventions. My therapeutic approach also incorporates a holistic framework when appropriate and desired by the client.

In my work with families, I believe active parent involvement is an integral factor in the successful treatment for all children and adolescents. My treatment approach is comprehensive and includes collaboration with schools when appropriate.

Many children and adolescents struggle with issues today because they have not yet developed and mastered the skills necessary to be successful in all aspects of their lives. Helping children, adolescents and families identify choices and learn new ways of responding and approaching situations is one of my strengths. I believe that if there are issues, there will be also be opportunities for change, and choices for resolution.

I believe couples therapy works best when it focuses on the perpetuating patterns that are driving couples apart and what positive steps each person can take to change them. I believe in actively structuring the sessions, so progress can be seen in six to ten sessions.

I understand that people are facing many difficult situations presenting challenges in today’s society. It is my experience individuals oftentimes seek therapy because they need help, understanding, and hope for a resolution. I believe in every situation there is always hope. I have day, evening and Sunday hours to accommodate working adults and busy children and adolescents.
